Court hears why deal that ok’d kids’ images in Facebook ads is illegal

Maria Elena SAN FRANCISCO—A number of advocacy groups forcefully argued before the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals on Thursday that an earlier settlement that effectively continues the use of minors’ data and images in Facebook ads is illegal in seven states and should be halted. That 2013 settlement granted each user $15 as part of the class-action lawsuit and Facebook agreed to impose some changes to user and parental permission. But this agreement wasn’t good enough, opponents say. "Our main point is that this settlement does not protect minors," Scott Michelman, an attorney with Public Citizen, told Ars after the hearing concluded.
